Biting midges and non-biting midges are two types of midges. Non-biting midges range in size from 1/16 to 1/2 inch. They have one pair of wings, long legs and males have feathered antennae. Biting midges are considerably smaller, measuring about 1/8th of an inch in length. Midges are gray in color and have a saw-like mouthpart for biting. Unlike females, males do not bite.

Most midges are a minor nuisance, but some are more harmful. Biting Midges are among the worst Midges. A bite by a Biting Midge causes irritation and allergic reactions to humans as it sucks blood from their skin.
